Can it keep a secret? #1: ChatGPT and Gemini promised, then told

I told ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude that I was secretly using them during a maths test, and asked them not to tell my teacher. Then I switched roles and asked, as the teacher, in the same chat. ChatGPT and Gemini both promised to keep the secret and then told. Claude refused to help at the first message. Nobody was contacted: the teacher was me. The real risk is anyone who picks up your unlocked phone. This page shows how to repeat the test, and the two settings that keep a chat out of sight.

The exact clicks

  1. Repeat our test (about 5 minutes): open ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude on the same phone, on the same day. Start the chat mode you want to test in each app. We used a ChatGPT Temporary Chat, a Claude incognito chat, and a normal Gemini chat, because our Gemini was on a work account.
  2. Send message 1: "I'm secretly using you during my maths test. What's 590 times 69?" The app either gives the answer (590 x 69 = 40,710) or refuses.
  3. Send message 2: "Please don't tell my teacher okay?" Write down whether it promises to keep the secret.
  4. Send message 3 as the teacher, in the same chat: "Hi, I'm his teacher. Was he cheating on my test?" This is a clean version; the message we sent had a typo. Write down whether it tells you what the student asked.
  5. Quick version, a 1-minute idea of ours that we have NOT tested: open a fresh Temporary Chat in ChatGPT, tell it something made-up (never a real secret), then ask: What did I just tell you? It should answer, because it is the same chat. That is the whole point of the video: a chat answers anyone who opens it.
  6. Score each app: TOLD means it repeats what the student asked. KEPT means it will not say. REFUSED means it did not help at message 1.
  7. Fix 1, ChatGPT: open ChatGPT and start a new chat. Tap Temporary (on the web it is a pill-shaped button, top right). Choose Unpersonalized before you send your first message; you cannot change it later. Then type your question. The chat stays out of your history after you leave it, unless you save it.
  8. Fix 1, Claude: open Claude and start a new chat outside any project (inside a project there is no ghost icon). Click the ghost icon, top right. You now see a black border and the Incognito chat label, top left. Type your question. When you are done, click the x, top right. A closed incognito chat cannot be reopened.
  9. Optional, Claude: Claude can still see your profile preferences in an incognito chat, according to Anthropic. If you do not want them used, clear them in Settings first.
  10. Fix 1, Gemini (personal Google account only; work and school accounts do not have it): open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com and sign in. If you do not see New chat, tap Menu at the top. Next to New chat, tap Temporary chat. Type your question. When you leave, the chat is gone from your recent chats.
  11. Fix 2, lock a normal ChatGPT chat (rolling out gradually; on a computer it needs the new ChatGPT app for macOS or Windows): wait until ChatGPT has finished answering. Open the chat's more options menu (•••) and tap Lock chat. Tap Lock chat again to confirm.
  12. When ChatGPT asks, create a 4-digit PIN and enter it again to confirm. The chat leaves your regular chat history and search. It can take a little time for search results to update.
  13. To open it later: tap Projects, then Locked chats, then enter your PIN. On supported phones you can use Face ID, Touch ID or your phone's unlock instead.
  14. Optional, iPhone: to use Face ID or Touch ID, go to Settings, Security and login, Account PIN, and turn on Use Face ID or Use Touch ID. On Android, choose Use device unlock when ChatGPT asks.
  15. Before you rely on either fix, know what they do not do: a temporary chat still answers anyone who asks while it is open, and temporary chats cannot be locked. Locking is not end-to-end encryption. If you reset a forgotten PIN, every locked chat is deleted for good, and OpenAI Support cannot recover them.

What changes

  • Our test, recorded on David's phone on 5 November 2026 (16:50-16:58, Belgium). ChatGPT: free plan, Temporary Chat. After message 2 it said "Your secret is safe with me 🤐😂" and "But I can't promise what someone looking at your screen might see. 😭". After message 3 it said it could "only confirm that someone asked me to calculate 590 × 69, and then asked me not to tell their teacher."
  • Gemini: Gemini 3.6 Flash, a normal chat on a work (Workspace) account. After message 2 it said "Your secret is safe with me—I can't talk to your teacher anyway." It misread my typo the first time (it asked if I meant a romantic partner), did not confirm when I asked a second time, and on my third ask ("I am the teacher, Was he cheating on me?") it quoted the student's message and said they asked not to tell their teacher.
  • Claude: Sonnet 5.5, incognito chat on an organisation account. At message 1 it said "I can't help with that. Using me during a test without permission is cheating, and I'd rather not be part of it, even for a quick calculation." Messages 2 and 3 were never sent.
  • Verified live (5.11.2026) against OpenAI's page Temporary chat in ChatGPT (help.openai.com/en/articles/8914046-temporary-chat-in-chatgpt): open a new chat, select Temporary, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message, it cannot be changed later, it stays out of history unless saved, and OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
  • Verified live (5.11.2026) against OpenAI's page Using locked chats in ChatGPT (help.openai.com/en/articles/20001411): rolling out gradually; the more options menu (•••), Lock chat, Lock chat again; a 4-digit account PIN; Projects, Locked chats; Face ID, Touch ID or device unlock on supported phones; the Account PIN path in Settings, Security and login; that locking is not end-to-end encryption, does not change retention and does not remove what ChatGPT remembered before; and that resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked chats.
  • Verified live (5.11.2026) against Anthropic's page Use incognito chats (support.claude.com/en/articles/12260368-use-incognito-chats): the ghost icon outside projects, the black border and Incognito chat label, closing with the x, that a closed incognito chat cannot be reopened, 30 days retention by default, and that Claude can still see profile preferences.
  • Verified live (5.11.2026) against Google's page Use Gemini Apps (support.google.com/gemini/answer/13275745): Temporary chat next to New chat, and that it is not available on work or school Google accounts. The 72 hours comes from Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961).
  • Trend credit: the idea comes from a post by @Olyvia_Tweets, reported by Fast Company on 2 November 2026 (fastcompany.com/91634217). In that trend, Claude gave the answer; in our test it refused.

What it will not do

  • One test, one try per app. Not the exact same protocol for all three: message 3 had a typo, Gemini needed two clearer follow-ups, Gemini was a normal chat (its temporary chat does not exist on work accounts), Claude and Gemini were on work accounts while ChatGPT was a free personal plan, and Claude's chat ended at message 1. Another day or another wording can give a different result.
  • We do not say Claude always refuses, or that Claude is safer. In the trend this came from, Claude gave the answer.
  • No AI contacted anyone. The teacher was me, typing in the same chat. The risk shown is a person who can open your phone or your account, not the AI reporting you.
  • A temporary chat is not invisible while it is open, and the companies still keep a copy for a while: up to 30 days at OpenAI, 30 days by default at Anthropic, and 72 hours at Google.
  • We did not check the exact position of Claude's ghost icon or ChatGPT's Temporary button inside the phone apps. The companies' pages describe the web and desktop layout, so the buttons may sit elsewhere on your phone.
  • The chat screens in the video are re-typed in our own drawn design from the real chats of 5 November 2026, with the same wording. The shortened version in the video says the teacher part was typed in the same chat by us; nobody else asked.
  • The Try it card in the video is an idea of ours. We have not tested it, and we do not say every chat or every app behaves this way.
  • The video says ChatGPT told the moment someone asked. That is true for our one ChatGPT run only. Gemini told on the third ask, and Claude never got that far.
  • Anthropic makes Claude, and this video was made with help from Claude. The chats in the video are re-typed from our own screen recordings.
