Can a person read your Gemini chats? What Google says, and the one setting to check
Google's own Gemini help page says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google says names and accounts are disconnected from chats before reviewers see them, and it tells you not to type anything confidential that you would not want a reviewer to see. This guide shows where the setting lives. It does not say that your chat was read.

The exact clicks
- Open https://myactivity.google.com/product/gemini in your browser and sign in to the Google account you use with Gemini. This is the Gemini Apps Activity page that Google's help page points to.
- Look for the Keep Activity setting on that page, as described on Google's help page. Google says that if you turn Keep Activity off, or use a temporary chat, your chats are still kept for 72 hours.
- Look for the auto-delete setting. Google says it is set to 18 months by default, and you can change it to 3 months or 36 months, or choose never. Pick the shortest time you are happy with.
- Optional: read Google's own page, Google's Gemini help page, at https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961 for the exact wording and the current menu names, because Google can rename them. We did not copy any menu label that we have not seen ourselves.
- Before you send a chat, do the one thing Google advises: do not type anything confidential that you would not want a reviewer to see.
What changes
- Verified live (3.11.2026) against Google's Gemini help page (support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961): a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers; reviewed chats are kept up to three years even if you delete your activity; names and accounts are disconnected before chats go to reviewers; with Keep Activity off or in temporary chats, chats are still kept 72 hours; auto-delete defaults to 18 months and can be 3 months, 36 months or never; the advice not to enter confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see; and that the control is in Gemini Apps Activity (myactivity.google.com/product/gemini).
What it will not do
- Only some chats are reviewed, not all, and Google says the names are removed first. The video says a person may read your chat, not that a person did.
- Turning off Keep Activity does not fully stop human review, according to Google's page. We do not say it does.
- I did not check the exact menu labels on a phone or in the app. Where I could not see a label myself, the steps point to Google's page instead of guessing one.
- The settings card in the video is re-created in our own design, not a recording of your account. Menus may look different on your screen.
- The sentence on screen is a short version of Google's advice. Please read Google's full page for the exact words.
