Google quietly turned your phone's camera into a live AI you can talk to

On March 26, 2026, Google confirmed its "Search Live" feature — point your phone's camera at something and have a real-time, voice-based back-and-forth conversation with Google's AI about it — had expanded globally to all 200+ countries and languages where AI Mode is available. It's free, built into the regular Google app on iPhone and Android, no sign-up required, and runs on Google's newest live audio/voice model (widely reported as Gemini 3.1 Flash Live).

The exact clicks

  1. Make sure you have the Google app (אפליקציית Google) installed and updated — it's the regular Google Search app, not a separate download.
  2. Open the Google app. Below the search bar, tap "Live" (חי).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions if this is your first time using it.
  4. Tap the camera/video icon to turn your camera on, so Search Live can see what you're pointing at, not just hear you.
  5. Just start talking — ask about whatever you're pointing the camera at. It answers out loud, in real time, and you can keep going back and forth.
  6. While it's running: tap "Wave" (נפנוף) to interrupt it and add a follow-up question or change the subject, "Mute" (השתקה) to mute your microphone, or "Exit" (יציאה) to end the session.

What changes

  • Verified live (2.10.2026): the March 26, 2026 global expansion to 200+ countries, confirmed directly on Google's own blog ("Search Live expands globally") and independently corroborated by TechCrunch ("Google is launching Search Live globally"), the-decoder.com, ppc.land, Manila Bulletin, and digitalapplied.com.
  • The exact current steps and button labels above were verified directly against Google's own support page (support.google.com/websearch/answer/16329036), fetched live rather than assumed from the announcement alone.
  • The underlying model name (reported across multiple outlets as Gemini 3.1 Flash Live) and the free/no-sign-up status of the base Live feature were each cross-checked against more than one independent source before being stated in the episode.

What it will not do

  • Search Live's real-world accuracy (handling of ambiguous objects, noisy environments, less common languages) was not independently tested by this channel — the claims here are sourced to Google's own announcement and independent reporting, not a first-hand demo.
  • It is not a substitute for expert judgment on anything high-stakes — a medical symptom, a legal document, a safety-critical repair. Treat it as a fast first look, not a final answer.
  • Some newer additions inside Google's AI Mode (described in press coverage as "information agents") are gated to Google AI Ultra subscribers — the base Search Live feature itself is free, but not every future AI Mode feature necessarily will be.
