Amazon shut off the setting that kept your Echo's voice off its servers — here's the one fix that's left

Until March 28, 2025, some Echo devices had a setting called "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" that kept voice processing on the device itself. Amazon discontinued it outright, in its own words, to free up cloud power for Alexa's new AI features — and as of May 2026 there is still no setting that keeps a voice request off Amazon's servers. There is a real, current fix for what happens to recordings afterward: one toggle in the Alexa app that makes "Alexa, delete everything I said today" actually work.

The exact clicks

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone (אפליקציית Alexa). Tap More (עוד) in the bottom-right corner, then Settings (הגדרות).
  2. Tap Alexa Privacy (פרטיות Alexa), then Manage Your Alexa Data (ניהול הנתונים שלך ב-Alexa), then Voice Recordings (הקלטות קוליות).
  3. Find "Enable Deletion by Voice" (אפשר מחיקה בקול) and turn the toggle on. This is the step that actually matters — without it, the voice command below does nothing.
  4. From then on, any time you want that day's recordings gone, just say it out loud to any Echo device: "Alexa, delete everything I said today." You can also say "Alexa, delete what I just said" for a single request, or "Alexa, delete my entire voice history" to clear everything on file.
  5. Optional: in the same Voice Recordings screen, set an auto-delete window (3 months or 18 months) so recordings clear themselves going forward, instead of relying on remembering to say the command.
  6. There is no app setting that stops the recording from reaching Amazon's servers in the first place — the only control that does that is the physical mute button on top of the device, which disables the microphone entirely.

What changes

  • Verified live (1.10.2026): Amazon's discontinuation of "Do Not Send Voice Recordings," effective March 28, 2025, is Amazon's own wording in a customer email, quoted directly by Gizmodo (March 2025) — "we have decided to no longer support this feature," citing the cloud processing power Alexa's generative-AI features require.
  • Checked for staleness, not assumed current from a 2025 source alone: a May 2026 source (ghostshield.ai) describing today's Alexa privacy controls lists only auto-delete windows and opting out of human review as available — no on-device or cloud-block option, because none exists anymore.
  • The deletion-by-voice fix itself was cross-checked across Amazon's own customer-service page and independent how-tos (TechRadar, ExpressVPN, Tom's Guide) rather than a single source, specifically because the command does nothing at all until the toggle is turned on first — a viewer who skipped that step would reasonably conclude the whole trick doesn't work.

What it will not do

  • This does not stop your voice request from being sent to Amazon's servers — that capability was removed in March 2025 and nothing in the app restores it. It only lets you delete recordings after the fact.
  • The voice-delete commands only work after "Enable Deletion by Voice" has been turned on in the app. Said before that, they're just ignored.
  • The physical mute button is the only thing that blocks a recording from being made (and sent) in the first place — it is not a substitute for the deletion toggle, and vice versa.
