AI can already read your private messages

WhatsApp has a real feature called Message Summaries: Meta AI reads your unread messages in a chat and gives you a bulleted summary, so you can catch up without reading everything yourself. It's off by default, and Meta says its own AI never sees your real messages while generating the summary.

The exact clicks

Make sure WhatsApp is updated to the latest version.
Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then 'Chats', then 'Private Processing'.
Turn on 'Private Processing features'.
Open any chat with unread messages, and tap the '(Number) unread messages' divider.
Select 'Summarize privately' to see a bulleted summary of what you missed.
To turn it off: go back to Settings → Chats → Private Processing and turn the toggle off.

What it will not do

Rollout is limited to select markets, starting with the US in English — Meta states it is expanding to more countries and languages, with no fixed date given.
Meta's own materials acknowledge a generated summary 'might be inappropriate or inaccurate' — treat it as a starting point, not a substitute for reading anything you need to act on.
