Actually Works · Episode 67
15 / 80YouTube ignores the birthday you typed.
YouTube's help page says an AI model estimates whether an account belongs to someone over or under 18, "regardless of the birthdate in their account". If it decides a user is under 18, teen protections are applied automatically. The page also says how to fix a wrong guess. It does not say which signals the model uses or how accurate it is.
The exact clicks
- On a computer, open myaccount.google.com/privacy and sign in with the Google account you use for YouTube.
- Click Personal info, then click Birthday, and look at the date. This is the birthday YouTube's AI estimate ignores: the help page says the model decides regardless of the birthdate in the account.
- If YouTube treats you as under 18 by mistake, the help page says you can verify your age by submitting your government ID, credit card or selfie through a verification process in your Google Account. The page does not give exact clicks for it, so look for the age verification prompt in your Google Account or in YouTube.
- Optional: if you use m.youtube.com, Google's page says you may need to sign out and sign back in after verifying your age.
- Optional: parents can read the list of what changes for an account identified as under 18: age-restricted videos blocked, break and bedtime reminders on by default, extra safeguards on recommendations and search results, and non-personalized ads. The list is on YouTube's help page.
- Optional: the page names the countries where the model is used: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the US, and countries in the European Economic Area. It does not say anything about a specific country beyond that list.
What changes
- Verified live (9.10.2026) against YouTube's Help page on age estimation (support.google.com/youtube/answer/16422785): the quote about the birthdate, the country list, the protections, the ID, credit card or selfie fix. The page has no date, only a 2026 copyright.
- Verified live (9.10.2026) against YouTube Help page 3159776: myaccount.google.com/privacy, Personal info, Birthday; the sign-out note for m.youtube.com. That page does not mention the AI estimate.
- Topic chosen because episode 66 promised it on air, and to move away from privacy-of-chats topics to a myth-bust with a family angle.
What it will not do
- Not said in the video because the help page does not say it: which signals the model uses, how accurate it is, how many accounts it flags, and whether users get a notification. YouTube's July 2025 blog mentions signals such as the types of videos searched and watched; that is not repeated here.
- Whether Belgium or any single country is covered was not checked beyond the list on the page.
- This channel did not test this on a live account. Page names are taken from Google's help pages; your screen may differ slightly.
