Your phone might already have an AI that can catch a scammer mid-call

Google's Phone app has a real feature called Scam Detection: an on-device AI model (Gemini Nano) that listens to a live call for the patterns scammers use — urgency, gift cards, someone claiming to be your bank — and alerts you mid-call if it's suspicious. It's fully on-device and private. It's off by default.

The exact clicks

Make sure your Phone app is updated to the latest version.
Open the Phone app, tap 'More', then 'Settings', then 'Scam Detection'.
Turn on 'Scam Detection'.
During a live call, if the risk is high, you'll get a notification, sound, and vibration — an audible beep also plays at the start of the call and periodically through it.
You can dismiss a false alarm by selecting 'Not a scam', or end a suspicious call immediately.
To turn it off for one call only: tap 'More' then 'Scam Detection' during that call. To turn it off for all calls: Phone app → More → Settings → Scam Detection → toggle off.

What changes

Verified live (18.9.2026) directly against Google's own support documentation (support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/15654065) plus independent press (Android Police, Tom's Guide, Bleeping Computer), cross-referenced: exactly what the feature listens for, that it's fully on-device ('No conversation audio or transcription is stored on the device, sent to Google servers or anywhere else'), and the exact on/off steps.
A real, current, named AI model (Gemini Nano) at the center of the claim — per the 17.9.2026 standing rule added to channel/hooks-guide.md, and deliberately a different company/product from episode 41's ChatGPT topic per David's direct note to vary which AI product gets featured.

What it will not do

Pixel-only, and only specific models: in the US, Pixel 6 and later plus Pixel 9a/10a; internationally (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, UK), Pixel 9 and later, with a SIM and device location in one of those countries.
This is a different feature from Google's separate spoofed-caller-ID detection (which works across Samsung/OnePlus but only flags number spoofing, not conversation content) — this guide covers Scam Detection specifically.
It's off by default — it does nothing until you turn it on in Settings.
